Creating a morning ritual that fits your lifestyle & helps you achieve your goals.
Creating a morning ritual that fits your lifestyle & helps you achieve your goals.
So how do you create a ritual around your lifestyle, one that you can stick to and helps you achieve your life goals? Well we have mapped out a few points to help you craft the morning ritual of champions.
There's a pretty good chance you are reading this because you want to make a change. That change is different for everyone so having a clear goal makes it easier to stay focused and recognise change when it happens, so you can celebrate it.
We have listed some great morning ritual elements for different goals, but no matter what your goal make sure you define it and record it and celebrate the sh*t out of yourself as you move towards it.
GET FIT & HEALTHY - plan a movement activity for each morning. Soul and Base classes are great to get your sweating, also switch it up with alternate cardio days like a 5km run.
REDUCE STRESS – plan a stillness or movement activity each morning. If you go for a movement activity make sure you include a meditation at the end. Also treat yourself to a 45min W1LL Stretch class on a Sunday to get you super zen! It can also be helpful to set yourself a mantra to set the tone for the day… here are some we love
I am the architect of my life; I build its foundation and choose its contents.
I choose to let go of negative mental self-chatter.
I allow myself to be who I am without judgement.
I give myself permission to do what is right for me.
GET CREATIVE - plan a stillness or movement activity each morning. Then after your meditation or yoga grab a journal and get writing. If you are trying to work through some creative blocks we recommend The Artist’s Way, this will give you even more in depth work to get those creative juices flowing.
KICKING GOALS – The first step is to write yourself a visualisation of the future. Imagine you three months or a year in the future and explain all you have achieved, don’t let fear or doubt or the planning of how come into this. Use details and describe how you feel – this makes it feel real!
Then each morning plan a stillness or movement activity, then sit with your script and read it aloud to yourself. The first few mornings you will feel uncomfortable doing this but you are training your mind to believe that you are worthy to achieve these goals. Once you believe you can then you just have to do it.
Once you have your main elements all planned out, finish off your morning ritual by adding your favourite routine. Whether that’s a cup of lemon water and brewing your first coffee or making your morning meal.
Make it a ritual and reward yourself for completing another day.
The key to starting any new habit is not to set yourself up to fail. From the comfort of your sofa with a wine in hand it's easy to make grand plans, like entering a half marathon even if you haven't run since primary school cross country. But after the first 3 minutes of jogging you feel defeated, throw your runners back to the back of the cupboard and forget the whole morning thing.
So, if you usually wake up at 8am and have never run other than to catch a bus - don't plan to wake up at 5am do a casual 5km run then finish with a beach meditation (well not right off the bat anyway). However, if you are an early riser and run regularly this may be the perfect ritual for your morning.
Practice some self-awareness, know your body and set yourself an achievable goal, around your body clock and lifestyle. If that means waking up at 8am doing a 5 min meditation, drinking a glass of water then really enjoying the process of making your coffee... then do that.
If it's more your style to run, do a quick yoga session and then meditate for 20 minutes all before the sun rises... go for it. Just be kind to yourself, love the way you live and be bloody proud of yourself when you're kicking goals.
Studies have shown if you write your goals down you’re 40% more likely to achieve them…. So, get a pen and paper and ink your ritual out.
Start with your GOAL, then write out your plan for each morning, if you have changed it up a bit make sure you detail your plan for each morning of the week. Revisit this every week and document any changes… maybe in a nice new journal!
Another great tip is to organise yourself each night, lay out your clothes, get your journal ready & put your coffee cup on the bench, so in the morning you just have to get up and do it!
So, you had a few wines and your head is a bit foggy, it's raining and you want to stay in bed... amazing do that! Or the kids are up early, the house is a more like a scene from Jumanji and you skip a morning... you do what you need to (kids be crazy!).
People put way too much emphasis on perfection. Life is messy and adulting is hard so if you miss a day or two or three, who cares. Just pick it back up and keep on going... perfection is just your doubt, that little voice in your head making you think you'll fail anyway. You won't... just keep going.
If you are still reading by now I'd say there's a pretty good chance you're considering this whole morning thing. We are not going to name drop and list the big hitters who swear by their morning activities... cause really, who cares what they do. It's what you do that counts.
